Ever noticed how exquisite art comes from the most unlikely places? Here is a beautiful example. This intricate pencil sketch was done in prison. The artist, an inmate with my brother, doesn't think much of his life. Yet his abilities with a cheap set of pencils and thin fabric suggest passion and creativity that were handed to him in the form of a gift.
Look around! Our Creator is an artist. He expresses Himself to us in the most esthetic ways. I wonder why we don't see more artistic expression in the church. God is so colorful: look at His people. God loves beauty: look at His sunrise. God bestows crazy talent to individuals: consider the songs we write, the words we pen, the shapes we paint. When we do these things, we are glorifying God, the author of invention. I believe if we slowed down enough to really know the people around us, we would see evidence of God's creativity that might surprise us.
The detail is stunning up close. And who is the artist? A convicted felon. Wonder if anyone has seen this guy up close? Sometimes the most beautiful people are the ones who have survived painful hardship?
